Carmel Beach & Scenic Road
Ocean Avenue runs straight into Carmel Beach, and the Scenic Road pathway follows the bluff south past cypress and rocks to Carmel Point, Tor House and the mouth of the Carmel River.

Discover Carmel Beach & Scenic Road
Carmel Beach lies at the foot of Ocean Avenue. Dogs may be off leash if they stay under their owners’ voice control, and Mutt Mitts are kept at the top of every beach stairway. Beach fires follow the city’s own guidelines. (Visit Carmel)
The Scenic Pathway runs through sculpted Monterey cypress from Scenic Road at Eighth Avenue to near Martin Way, with nine stairways down to the sand. (Visit Carmel) The town’s early zoning also barred commercial development on the beach. (Wikipedia)
On Carmel Point, Robinson Jeffers built Tor House between 1919 and 1924 from granite boulders hauled up from the beach, then added Hawk Tower, which he began in 1920 and finished in 1924. It was named a National Historic Landmark on 13 December 2024. (Wikipedia)
At the south end of Scenic Road, Carmel River State Beach covers 297 acres and was established in 1953. A lagoon behind the sand draws migratory birds, dogs must be leashed, and swimming is considered extremely dangerous because of strong currents and a steep drop-off. Sebastian Vizcaino landed here in 1602. (Wikipedia)
