Discover Carmel Valley

Carmel Valley was recognized as an American Viticultural Area in 1983. It covers about 19,200 acres, of which roughly 300 are planted to grapes, and has about 25 wineries, with some vineyards dating to the 1870s. (Wikipedia)

The vineyards sit in the Santa Lucia Range about five miles inland, generally above 1,000 feet and above much of the coastal fog. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot make up more than 70% of the harvest. (Wikipedia)

Carmel Valley Village is about 13 miles east-southeast of Carmel-by-the-Sea. It was founded in 1946 as Airway Village, on land that was once part of Rancho Los Laureles, granted in 1839. (Wikipedia)

You do not have to leave town to taste: Visit Carmel keeps a list of tasting rooms and a Carmel-by-the-Sea Wine Walk. (Visit Carmel)
